Hi, my name is Laura and I’m attempting to write my way through an attempt at becoming a more reliable cook and a healthier person in general. And it’s starting today with dates. I mean the food, not the romantic outing. Besides liking lame puns, I think that it is important to take things in a step by step process, or one day at a time. For me at least, it’s easier to justify a bad food choice when I’m looking at health as a long term journey. Don’t get me wrong, it definitely is a long process, but sometimes when I take the long view it’s easy for me to make bad choices in the short term, and justify it by telling myself I’ll make up for it later in the week. Some people are able to make up for it later on, but I’m usually not one of those people! Food for me has always been a slippery slope. I love indulging in rich and delicious foods, however those choices aren’t always the best for my health, or my wallet. I’m writing this to try to keep myself accountable, and also keep a record of what I find does and doesn’t work for me. So this brings me back to dates – I’ve never had one. At least I don’t think I have. In my mind I’ve always thought I would never like them, but I’ve been wrong before, so I’m willing to give it a try. The reason I’m starting with something like dates is because I see a lot of recipes for snacks or granola bars or other items that usually have a lot more sugar. I definitely have a problem with wanting to snack, and loving things with a lot of sugar, so I’m going to attempt a date granola bar recipe. I’ll report back later with how that goes…
